Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson has spoken about the band’s new drummer and how he brings his own musical identity to the group, following the departure of long-time member Nicko McBrain. The frontman made it clear that while the newcomer respects McBrain’s legacy, he isn’t trying to imitate him.
McBrain, who joined Iron Maiden in 1982, became one of the defining forces behind the band’s sound through his work on classic albums such as Powerslave, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and The Book of Souls. His precise yet expressive drumming helped shape Iron Maiden’s music for over four decades. However, after health issues in recent years, McBrain stepped back from his full-time role, allowing the band to bring in a new drummer to continue their touring and recording schedule.
Speaking about the change, Dickinson explained that the decision was made with great care. “Nicko’s style is unique there’s only one Nicko,” he said. “The new drummer isn’t here to replace him or to copy him. He has his own way of playing, and that’s exactly what we wanted. He understands the spirit of Iron Maiden, but he brings something new to the table.”
According to Dickinson, the new member fits in naturally, contributing his own energy and creativity while staying true to the band’s sound. “It’s important that whoever sits behind the kit captures the feeling of the songs,” he continued. “At the same time, we don’t want anyone pretending to be someone else. The new drummer has a slightly more technical and modern approach, which gives some of the songs a new texture. It feels fresh but still like Maiden.”
Fans who have attended recent Iron Maiden shows have noted subtle differences in rhythm and dynamics but praised the seamless transition. The performances have retained the band’s trademark power and precision, while the new drummer’s style has added a renewed intensity to their live sound.
Dickinson expressed gratitude toward McBrain, recognizing his immense contribution to Iron Maiden’s history. “Nicko’s drumming is a huge part of who we are,” he said. “He helped define the sound of this band, and his influence will always be part of Iron Maiden. But like everything in life, things evolve, and we’re proud of how we’ve handled this change.”
With over 40 years of history and countless tours behind them, Iron Maiden continues to push forward, showing no signs of slowing down. The band remains committed to creating new music and maintaining the high standards that have made them one of the most respected names in rock and metal.
As Bruce Dickinson put it, “Iron Maiden has always been about progress. Every new chapter brings challenges and excitement. What matters most is that the heart of the band the passion and the purpose stays the same.”
