Sha’Carri Richardson Breaks Silence, Says She’ll Get Help After Airport Incident
Olympic gold medalist sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has announced that she is seeking professional help after her July 27 arrest, which followed a physical altercation with her boyfriend, fellow U.S. sprinter Christian Coleman, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
In a message shared on Instagram late Monday, the 25-year-old athlete reflected on the incident:
“I’m taking this time not just to see myself more clearly, but to get the kind of help that will truly reflect who I am at heart and in spirit. I won’t let this moment define me, but I will accept it and grow from it,” Richardson said.
Richardson, who earned silver in the 100m at the Paris Olympics and helped the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m relay, was taken into custody after security footage appeared to show her grabbing Coleman’s backpack and pushing him against a wall during a dispute in the terminal.
Shortly after the arrest, she posted defiantly on Twitter, writing in all caps: “I WILL ALWAYS GET BACK UP!!!”
On Monday, she expanded on that thought in her first detailed remarks since the incident, saying she welcomed accountability and was committed to self-reflection.
“More than anything, it’s been a time of looking inward, realizing that I put myself in a compromising position with someone I deeply care about,” she said in an Instagram story. “Holding myself accountable is part of that process.”
Richardson went on to thank her supporters family, fans, and the public for their encouragement and honesty.
“My goal is to be more not only for myself but also for my family and my fans,” she added. “I’m grateful to those who continue to love me, support me, and even challenge me to be my best. I won’t run from this, but face it head-on, because I know what’s on the other side is greater. To reach it, you have to go through the challenges.”
