BREAKING: Black Sabbath GUITARIST Tony Iommi Pa…read more.

August 8, 2025 – For more than half a century, Tony Iommi’s name has been synonymous with heavy metal guitar. Now, in the wake of an enormous personal loss, the legendary Black Sabbath co-founder is stepping into uncharted territory: releasing his first full-length solo album in nearly two decades. The record, titled “For Oz”, is a deeply personal tribute to his lifelong friend, collaborator, and fellow metal pioneer, Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away earlier this year.

The announcement came early Friday morning via Iommi’s official website and social media channels, where he posted a heartfelt message alongside a black-and-white photo of himself and Osbourne laughing backstage in the 1970s.

“Losing Ozzy left a hole in my life I can’t fill,” Iommi wrote. “We started this journey as kids from Aston who just wanted to make music and maybe get out of the factory jobs we were destined for. This record is my way of keeping him close  remembering the mischief, the madness, and the magic we made together.”

A Bond Forged in Birmingham

Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne’s story is one of rock’s most enduring legends. Both grew up in the working-class district of Aston in Birmingham, England, and both shared a hunger to create music that was heavier, darker, and more unrelenting than anything else at the time.

In 1968, they co-founded Black Sabbath alongside bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward, pioneering a sound that would define heavy metal. Through countless tours, chart-topping albums, internal conflicts, and reconciliations, the relationship between Iommi and Osbourne endured  a complicated but unbreakable bond between two men who, despite their differences, were brothers in music.

Osbourne passed away in February 2025 at the age of 76 after years of battling health issues. His death was felt deeply not only by fans but also by the countless musicians he inspired. For Iommi, the loss was personal in a way few could understand.

Crafting “For Oz”

“For Oz” will be Iommi’s first full-length solo album since Fused in 2005, and while fans can expect his signature heavy riffs, the guitarist says the record will also showcase a more introspective side.

According to Iommi, the album was written in the months following Osbourne’s death, during a period of intense grief. “Music has always been my therapy,” he explained in a BBC Radio interview earlier today. “When Ozzy passed, I didn’t know what to do with myself. So I picked up the guitar. Every riff, every chord felt like a conversation with him.”

The project will feature a range of guest musicians and vocalists, many of whom had personal and professional connections to Osbourne. While Iommi has not yet revealed the full tracklist, he confirmed that several songs will include lyrical references to moments from Black Sabbath’s history, as well as nods to some of Osbourne’s solo career highlights.

Balancing Power and Reflection

Fans who expect an entirely slow, mournful record may be in for a surprise. While “For Oz” will contain quieter, more melodic tracks  including an acoustic piece tentatively titled “By the Window”, inspired by Osbourne’s final days  it will also feature the crushing, doom-laden sound that defined Black Sabbath.

“Ozzy loved the heavy stuff,” Iommi said. “But he also loved a good melody. I wanted to capture both sides the darkness and the light.”

A Tribute Beyond Music

In addition to the album, Iommi announced that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to two charities: The Prince of Darkness Foundation, established in Osbourne’s name to support Parkinson’s research, and a youth music program in Birmingham aimed at providing instruments and lessons to underprivileged kids.

“We came from nothing,” Iommi said. “If this record can help some young lad or lass pick up a guitar instead of getting into trouble, then I think Ozzy would be smiling down on us.”

The First Single and Release Date

The lead single from “For Oz”, titled “Iron Soul”, is set to be released in September. Early reports suggest the song is a blistering, mid-tempo anthem with a soaring chorus  a love letter to both their friendship and the enduring power of metal. The full album is scheduled for release in late November, just in time for what would have been Osbourne’s 77th birthday.

Fans React

Within minutes of the announcement, social media was flooded with emotional responses from fans around the world. Messages ranged from grief-stricken reflections on Osbourne’s passing to excitement for Iommi’s long-awaited return to solo work.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This is going to destroy me emotionally but I can’t wait. Tony and Ozzy were the heart of Sabbath. This feels like closure.”

Another added: “Only Tony could give Ozzy the tribute he deserves. November can’t come soon enough.”

Looking Ahead

While it remains unclear whether Iommi will tour in support of the album, he has not ruled it out entirely. “I’m not as young as I used to be,” he said with a wry smile during the BBC interview. “But if the fans want it, and if I feel up to it, who knows?”

For now, “For Oz” stands as both a farewell and a celebration  a reminder that while Ozzy Osbourne may be gone, the music he made with Tony Iommi will echo through time, as heavy and as immortal as ever.
