“Never say never,” says the legendary drummer, as fans hope for his return

For over four decades, Nicko McBrain has been the rhythmic heartbeat of Iron Maiden a man whose thunderous drumming has powered some of the most iconic songs in heavy metal history. And while the legendary drummer officially stepped back from full-time touring last year due to health issues, he’s now giving fans a glimmer of hope: his time on stage may not be entirely over.

In a recent heartfelt interview, the 72-year-old musician spoke with the warmth and honesty fans have come to love, reflecting on his journey with Iron Maiden and the very real possibility of returning for a performance or two if his health allows it.

“I’m not saying I’ll never play with the boys again,” McBrain said with a hopeful grin. “If the timing’s right, and I’m feeling good, I’d love to jump back on stage even if it’s just for a few songs.”

That one simple statement has sent a wave of excitement through the Iron Maiden fanbase. For many, Nicko McBrain is Iron Maiden his energy, humor, and raw talent forming an essential piece of the band’s soul since he joined in 1982. Whether on classics like The Trooper or Aces High, his drumming isn’t just fast and precise it’s filled with fire and personality.

But McBrain’s journey hasn’t been easy in recent years. In 2023, he suffered a stroke that left him with partial paralysis on his right side. At the time, fans were devastated not just because it put his future with the band in question, but because it affected something so deeply tied to who he is: playing the drums.

Yet true to form, McBrain didn’t give up. With the help of physical therapy, a loving support system, and his own unshakable will, he fought his way back. Just a few months ago, he surprised the rock world by taking the stage at a charity show in London, delivering a short but powerful performance that left fans in tears.

“Getting behind the kit again was emotional,” McBrain admitted. “Not just because of the music, but because of everything I’ve been through. It reminded me of why I love this so much.”

Though he’s not able to commit to full-scale tours anymore, McBrain made it clear that he hasn’t turned his back on performing altogether. That sentiment was echoed by Iron Maiden bassist and founder Steve Harris, who said earlier this year, “Nicko is and always will be family. Whether he plays with us again for five minutes or fifty minutes, he’s always got a place on our stage.”

Fans around the world are already buzzing at the thought of a reunion. Social media has been flooded with heartfelt messages, many calling for McBrain to make a special appearance on what could be Iron Maiden’s upcoming 50th anniversary tour in 2026.

“Even just seeing him play one song live again would mean the world,” one fan posted on X. “Nicko’s not just a drummer he’s an inspiration.”

For McBrain, the love from fans has been overwhelming. “Their support has been unreal,” he said, visibly touched. “They’ve stuck with me through thick and thin. If I ever do get back up there, it’s because of them.”

These days, McBrain continues to play drums at home as part of his rehab. He practices regularly, even if only for short bursts, and says that music remains his greatest therapy.

“I still sit behind the kit, still bash it out,” he laughed. “Maybe not like I used to, but it’s still me in there.”

As for the future? McBrain isn’t making any promises but he’s not ruling anything out, either.

“Look, I’m not getting any younger,” he chuckled, “but I’ve still got the fire. If the body lets me, I’ll be there.”

In a world where heroes often fade quietly, Nicko McBrain’s enduring spirit continues to shine and his fans, as always, are ready to cheer him on.

“Never say never,” he said, his voice calm but full of life. “That’s all I’m saying.”

And that’s all anyone needed to hear.
