Coldplay’s recent performance of “Fix You” at Stanford Stadium carried extra emotional weight, likely due to frontman Chris Martin’s reported breakup with longtime partner, actress Dakota Johnson. After nearly eight years together in an on-and-off relationship, the 48-year-old musician and the 35-year-old “Fifty Shades of Grey” star have parted ways, according to People.
Martin and Johnson began dating in 2017 and were last publicly seen together in mid-May in Malibu, where they had shared a home since 2021. Despite that outing, sources say this breakup “feels final.” Neither Martin nor Johnson has commented publicly on the split.
Throughout their relationship, the couple maintained a relatively private profile. However, their affection for one another occasionally surfaced in public moments — most notably during a 2021 Coldplay concert in London. At the time, Martin dedicated the song “My Universe” to Johnson, telling the crowd, “She’s here.”
Johnson, who spent part of her childhood in San Francisco, once described their lifestyle as quiet and home-centered. In a 2021 Elle UK interview, she shared that they preferred staying in due to their busy schedules. “Most of the partying takes place inside my house,” she said.
Johnson also had a close relationship with Martin’s children, Apple and Moses, from his previous marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow. In a 2023 Bustle interview, she expressed her deep love for them, saying, “I love those kids like my life depends on it.”
Earlier this year, People reported the couple had been secretly engaged for years, underscoring the seriousness of their bond. Still, despite their deep connection, their relationship appears to have reached its end, coinciding with Coldplay’s ongoing global tour and Johnson’s upcoming film release, Materialists, on June 13.
