In a major offseason acquisition, the University of Kentucky has secured the commitment of 7-foot defensive standout Magoon Gwath, formerly of San Diego State. Gwath, widely regarded as one of the most dominant shot-blockers in college basketball, has officially joined the Wildcats following a brief stint in the NCAA transfer portal.

During his redshirt freshman season at SDSU, Gwath averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and an impressive 2.6 blocks per game. His stellar defensive performances earned him both Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. His arrival in Lexington marks a significant win for new Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, who is looking to rebuild and make a statement in his first season at the helm.

Gwath had tested the NBA Draft waters but ultimately chose to return to college, prioritizing development and exposure in a competitive SEC environment. Kentucky’s tradition, coaching staff, and national spotlight played a major role in swaying his decision.

Kentucky fans are already buzzing about what Gwath brings to the table. His length, timing, and rim protection instantly improve the Wildcats’ interior defense. With Gwath anchoring the paint, Kentucky becomes a far more formidable team on both ends of the floor.

This move adds momentum to a busy offseason for Kentucky and positions them as a serious contender heading into the 2025–26 season. Gwath is expected to play a central role in the Wildcats’ push for both SEC and national titles.
