Sebastian Vettel has pointed to Lewis Hamilton as the key reason he was unable to expand his tally of Formula 1 world championships during his tenure at Ferrari. The German driver, who won four consecutive titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, faced fierce competition from Hamilton, who dominated the sport during Vettel’s years at Ferrari.

Vettel joined Ferrari in 2015 with hopes of ending the team’s championship drought, but his ambitions were repeatedly thwarted by Hamilton and the dominant Mercedes cars. Despite several near misses, Vettel was unable to secure a fifth title before parting ways with Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season.

In a recent interview, Vettel acknowledged Hamilton’s exceptional performance as a key factor in his struggles. “Lewis and Mercedes set the benchmark during those years. Even when we had a competitive car, they were just a step ahead, and that made the difference,” he explained.

Vettel’s years at Ferrari were marked by both highs and lows, including multiple race wins but also costly mistakes and technical setbacks that compounded the team’s challenges. Meanwhile, Hamilton continued to add to his championship tally, cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest drivers.

Although Vettel has since retired from Formula 1, his reflections highlight the enduring impact of his rivalry with Hamilton, which shaped one of the most competitive eras in recent F1 history.
