Reports: Penn state plot surprise move to sign wide receiver from….
In a strategic move to strengthen their receiving corps, Penn State has secured a commitment from former Troy University wide receiver Devonte Ross. Ross, who entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on December 16, 2024, brings a wealth of talent and experience to the Nittany Lions’ offense.
During his tenure at Troy, Ross emerged as a standout in the Sun Belt Conference. In the 2024 season, he amassed 76 receptions for 1,043 yards and led the conference with 11 touchdown catches. His exceptional performance earned him first-team All-Sun Belt honors as a receiver and second-team recognition as a return specialist. Notably, Ross showcased his versatility with a 77-yard punt return touchdown against Iowa, contributing to his impressive average of 120.4 all-purpose yards per game.
Ross’s decision to join Penn State comes at a pivotal time, as the team seeks to revamp its wide receiver unit following significant departures. Earlier in the offseason, leading receivers Harrison Wallace III and Omari Evans announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal. Wallace led the Nittany Lions in 2024 with 46 receptions for 720 yards and four touchdowns, while Evans contributed 21 catches for 415 yards and five touchdowns.
In response to these departures, Penn State has been proactive in the transfer market. Prior to securing Ross, the Nittany Lions added former USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson, aiming to infuse experience and depth into the receiving corps.
Head Coach James Franklin expressed enthusiasm about Ross’s addition, stating, “Devonte brings a dynamic skill set to our offense. His ability to make explosive plays both as a receiver and return specialist will be invaluable as we continue to compete at the highest level.”
Ross’s journey to Penn State reflects his resilience and determination. Initially committing to Marshall in 2020, he later signed with Kentucky but did not see playing time before transferring to Troy. His breakout performances with the Trojans have now paved the way for this opportunity with the Nittany Lions.
As Penn State prepares for the upcoming season, Ross is expected to make an immediate impact, providing quarterback Drew Allar with a reliable and explosive target downfield. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this strategic acquisition influences the team’s offensive dynamics in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference.
