Mercedes Toto Wolff CHARGES FIA Following Penalty…
An visibly frustrated Toto Wolff admits he has already put the Mercedes legal team on speed dial after an unprecedented, post-race FIA ruling completely flipped the Monaco Grand Prix results on its head.
The chaos started after Alpine successfully challenged a series of pitlane speeding penalties. They managed to prove that the official timing gear was glitching due to track variations, forcing the FIA to wipe away Pierre Gasly’s penalties and hand him back a third-place podium.
But while Alpine is celebrating, the Mercedes garage is absolutely seething. George Russell was hit with the exact same pitlane speeding penalty while fighting for a podium. To make matters worse, a communication mix-up meant Mercedes didn’t serve it properly, triggering an even harsher drive-through penalty that knocked Russell completely out of the points.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming sessions in Barcelona, Wolff didn’t hide his anger, confirming he’s already checking what legal options are on the table to get Russell’s lost points back.
“I just left when we were on the phone with our lawyers to look at what we can do for George,” Wolff said. “Clearly, without the penalty, it would have been a totally different outcome for his race. The implications for the championship are massive.”
The biggest headache for Mercedes is F1’s rigid rulebook. Because Russell actually served his penalty during the live race unlike Gasly, whose penalties were tacked on after the checkered flag the results are incredibly hard to overturn. Live-race penalties are usually set in stone.
Wolff openly admitted that fighting the system is a massive long shot, but insisted Mercedes isn’t backing down without a fight.
“Do we think that we realistically have a chance of reverting the result? I don’t think so,” Wolff admitted. “But we definitely have to give it a go if we see a millimeter of a chance.”
With Red Bull and McLaren also reportedly furious over how the FIA handled the situation, the paddock is bracing for a tense, drawn-out legal standoff.
