Antonelli Claims First F1 Win as Hamilton’s Ferrari Era Hits…
The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix delivered a historic spectacle today as 19-year-old sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula 1 victory, leading a Mercedes one-two finish. While the teenager’s triumph ended Italy’s 20-year wait for a Grand Prix winner, the paddock was equally electrified by Lewis Hamilton, who clinched his first-ever podium for Scuderia Ferrari in a performance he described as “back to my best.”
The drama began before the lights even went out. In a shocking turn of events, both McLaren drivers, including reigning world champion Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri, were forced to withdraw minutes before the start due to separate technical issues. This left the front of the grid open for a Mercedes and Ferrari showdown.
Antonelli, who made history on Saturday as the youngest-ever polesitter, faced an immediate challenge at the start. Lewis Hamilton, starting from P3, executed a signature aggressive launch, sweeping around the outside of both Mercedes cars to take the lead into Turn 1. The Shanghai crowd erupted as the seven-time champion led a Grand Prix in the famous scarlet car for the first time since his high-profile move.
However, the Silver Arrows’ pace proved irresistible. By Lap 2, Antonelli retaliated with a clinical move at the Turn 14 hairpin to reclaim the lead. From there, the young Italian showed maturity far beyond his years, managing a controlled gap over teammate George Russell. Even a late-race scare a heavy lock-up and flat-spot at Turn 14 with four laps to go couldn’t rattle the teenager. He crossed the line 5.5 seconds ahead of Russell to become the second-youngest winner in F1 history, trailing only Max Verstappen.
“I’m speechless,” a tearful Antonelli said over the radio. “Thank you to the team for helping me achieve this dream. I really wanted to bring Italy back to the top and we did today.”
While Antonelli celebrated, the battle for the final podium spot became the story of the afternoon. Hamilton and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc engaged in a ferocious, wheel-to-wheel duel that lasted nearly the entire race. The pair swapped positions multiple times, often separated by nothing more than “a thin piece of paper,” according to Hamilton. Despite the intensity, the racing remained clean, and Hamilton eventually pulled away to secure third place.
The result marks Hamilton’s first podium since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix and a major redemption following a difficult debut season with Ferrari. “It was one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had in a long time,” Hamilton remarked post-race. “The battle with Charles was awesome. I started this voyage dreaming of being on the podium with Ferrari, and this gives me huge pride.”
As the F1 circus leaves Shanghai, George Russell remains the championship leader, but all eyes are now on the 19-year-old Italian hero and the resurgent Hamilton as the 2026 season enters a thrilling new chapter.
