BREAKING: The European Parliament has officially unveiled…
The European Parliament has officially unveiled the inaugural laureates of the European Order of Merit, marking a historic milestone in the Union’s 75-year journey. Among the high-profile names appearing on the first-ever honours list are former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U2 frontman Bono, both recognized for their lifelong commitment to “EU values” and their enduring efforts to push for deeper European integration.
The European Order of Merit was established last year to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the foundational document that paved the way for modern European unity. According to Parliament President Roberta Metsola, the award serves to “honour those who did not simply believe in Europe, but who helped build it.” The inductees were selected by a high-level committee featuring prominent figures such as Michel Barnier, José Manuel Barroso, and Josep Borrell.
A Legacy of Leadership and Unity
Angela Merkel, who served as Germany’s Chancellor for 16 years, has been appointed as a Distinguished Member, the order’s highest tier. The committee cited her steady hand through numerous continental crises including the 2008 financial crash and the 2015 migration crisis as evidence of her dedication to maintaining European stability.
Joining Merkel at the Distinguished level are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, recognized for his defense of democratic values, and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, the legendary leader of the Solidarity movement.
Culture and Philanthropy as European Pillars
While the list is heavily populated by political veterans, the inclusion of Bono (Paul David Hewson) and the members of U2 highlights the importance of cultural influence in the European project. Bono has been named a Member of the Order, recognized not only for his musical contributions but for his extensive humanitarian work and his advocacy for European social cohesion.
The list also features notable figures from diverse fields, including:
-
José Andrés, the chef and founder of World Central Kitchen.
-
Giannis Antetokounmpo, the NBA superstar recognized for his role as a global ambassador for European sport.
-
Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Debate and Ceremony
The announcement has not been without its share of debate. Within the European Parliament, some MEPs voiced criticism over Merkel’s inclusion, citing her past policies on Russian energy and austerity. However, President Metsola defended the selections, stating that the Order aims to recognize the broad and complex “diversity of excellence” that strengthens Europe’s standing in the world.
The formal conferral ceremony is scheduled to take place during the parliamentary session in Strasbourg this May, where the laureates will receive a badge, a ribbon bar, and a certificate signed by the President. This inaugural list sets a new precedent for the EU, establishing a formal system to celebrate individual contributions to the “common European home.”
