Breaking News: Alex Bregman Agrees to 3- year, $120M Deal.
In a significant offseason move, the Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent infielder Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract, as reported by The Athletic. The deal includes opt-out clauses after each of the first two seasons, providing Bregman with flexibility to re-enter free agency if desired.
Bregman, who will turn 31 in March, has been a cornerstone for the Houston Astros since his debut in 2016. Over nine seasons, he earned two All-Star selections and was instrumental in the Astros’ World Series championships in 2017 and 2022. In the 2024 season, Bregman posted a .260 batting average with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs over 145 games.
The Red Sox’s acquisition of Bregman addresses their need for a prominent right-handed bat, a priority for Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow this offseason. Breslow also bolstered the pitching staff by signing pitcher Walker Buehler and trading for ace Garrett Crochet.
Bregman’s defensive prowess adds significant value to the Red Sox. He won his first Gold Glove at third base in 2024, ranking in the 91st percentile in outs above average, according to MLB’s Statcast. However, with Rafael Devers entrenched at third base for Boston, Bregman is expected to shift to second base, a position he has played sparingly in his career.
The contract’s structure, offering a high average annual value of $40 million and opt-out options, was a key factor in Bregman’s decision. He reportedly turned down a six-year, $171.5 million offer from the Detroit Tigers, which included an opt-out after two seasons, favoring the flexibility and financial terms presented by Boston.
Bregman’s familiarity with Fenway Park may have also influenced his choice. In 21 career games at Fenway, he boasts a .375 batting average with seven home runs, indicating a strong comfort level in Boston’s home environment.
This signing reunites Bregman with Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was the bench coach for the Astros during their 2017 championship season. Cora has been vocal about his admiration for Bregman’s complete skill set and winning mentality.
