BREAKING: Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris Pa…read more.

Iron Maiden’s founding bassist and primary songwriter, Steve Harris, has spoken candidly about the recent departure of longtime drummer Nicko McBrain, marking the end of an era for one of heavy metal’s most enduring and influential bands. In a heartfelt conversation shared earlier this week, Harris described McBrain’s exit as both “understandable and deeply emotional,” reflecting on decades of camaraderie, creativity, and relentless touring that defined their shared journey.

Nicko McBrain, who joined Iron Maiden in 1982 before the release of Piece of Mind, became an integral part of the band’s identity, known for his technical mastery, charisma behind the kit, and signature upbeat personality. His drumming style helped define Iron Maiden’s classic sound across albums such as Powerslave, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and Brave New World. In recent years, however, McBrain faced health challenges, including a partial stroke in 2023 that temporarily affected his ability to perform.

While McBrain made a remarkable recovery and returned for select performances, Steve Harris confirmed that the physical demands of touring ultimately influenced the drummer’s decision to step down. “Nicko’s one of the toughest people I’ve ever met,” Harris said. “After what he went through, the fact that he came back at all was incredible. But touring at this level takes a toll, and he knew it was time to slow down. We all respected his decision.”

Harris emphasized that McBrain’s departure was handled with mutual respect and affection, describing it as “more like saying goodbye to family than a bandmate.” The bassist also expressed gratitude for McBrain’s decades of service to the band and their fans. “Nicko gave Iron Maiden his heart and soul for over forty years,” he added. “We wouldn’t be the band we are without him.”

The band has yet to confirm who will take over drumming duties full-time, but Harris assured fans that Iron Maiden’s spirit remains unbroken. “We’ve always faced challenges head-on,” he said. “The music, the fans, and the legacy keep us going. Nicko will always be part of that story, no matter what.”

McBrain, for his part, released a brief statement thanking the fans and his bandmates. “This band has been my life,” he said. “I’ve lived every dream I could have imagined and shared the stage with brothers I’ll never forget. Now it’s time for me to rest and enjoy the music from the other side of the stage for a change.”

As Iron Maiden prepares for what could be one of their final major tours, the band’s message is clear  though the lineup may evolve, their dedication to the music and their audience remains unwavering. For Harris and his bandmates, McBrain’s influence will echo in every beat of Iron Maiden’s future.
