If you were among the thousands who tuned in to watch Back to the Beginning on Saturday night, you might’ve been taken aback by how it ended. As the livestream wrapped up, it appeared that Ozzy Osbourne was left all alone onstage seated on his throne while the rest of the original Black Sabbath members waved and walked off. For many fans, it felt abrupt. A little cold, even.

But according to bassist Geezer Butler, that moment was simply misunderstood.

“I keep hearing that people watching the stream thought that our set ended abruptly… with us just walking off,” Butler wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “Sorry if it seemed that way. I went off to get this cake for Ozzy.”

Yes, a cake. The moment wasn’t about abandonment it was about celebration.

Butler even shared a touching photo of himself presenting the surprise treat to Ozzy backstage. And in true down-to-earth fashion, he gave a shoutout to the fan who managed to catch the real, heartwarming ending on camera: “Cheers to the fan that captured the proper ending.”

This concert wasn’t just any show. It marked the final time the original Black Sabbath lineup Ozzy, Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward would ever take the stage together. And for Ozzy, it was the last live performance of his legendary career. Emotions were high. So was the weight of the moment.

The night was packed with rock royalty Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Mastodon, Steven Tyler, Billy Corgan, and many more came out to honor the legacy of Sabbath and its Prince of Darkness.

In the end, it wasn’t a cold goodbye. It was a bittersweet, quiet farewell… with cake.
