Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has revealed a re-release of his 1994 solo effort More Balls To Picasso. The new release, featuring fresh mixes, never-before-heard material, and enhanced production, marks a highlight in Dickinson’s renaissance as a solo artist and offers long-time, and new, fans alike the chance to rediscover one of his most personal projects.
Originally released in the mid-’90s, during his short sabbatical from Iron Maiden, More Balls To Picasso saw Dickinson moving away from the band’s signature heavy metal and into a more experimental hard rock territory. The album yielded the likes of “Tears of the Dragon,” a soaring ballad that remains a fan favorite and highlight of his solo catalog.
The 2025 reissue part of a larger effort from Dickinson to re-present his solo work to a new audience includes newly remixed and remastered recordings, as well as previously unreleased demos and alternate takes. As Dickinson describes it, the goal was to “bring out the emotional core of the songs with today’s sonic tools,” while still preserving the raw energy of the original recordings.
“I always felt there was more to uncover in More Balls To Picasso,” Dickinson said in a statement. “With modern production and some added context, we’ve managed to breathe new life into these songs without losing the spirit that made them what they are.”
The re-recorded album will be released as part of a deluxe box set, including expanded liner notes, previously unseen photographs from the recording sessions, and contributions from collaborators such as guitarist Roy Z and producer Shay Baby. Digital and streaming releases will also be available, offering a number of ways for fans to experience the re-recorded album.
This release comes during a rush of solo activity from Dickinson. His 2024 solo record The Mandrake Project was widely praised and was supported with an extensive world tour. With the focus again on his solo career, Dickinson has indicated that more solo material possibly including live records and archive releases can be anticipated.
As Iron Maiden tour the globe, Dickinson’s solo re-releases provide an intriguing glimpse into the diverse career of heavy metal’s most identifiable voice. For new and longtime fans, More Balls To Picasso now rings with renewed intensity and depth.
