Max Verstappen receives Austrian GP boost as Red Bull unveil RB21 upgrade plans

June 26, 2025 – Spielberg – Reigning four‑time world champion Max Verstappen heads into this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix buoyed by fresh optimism after Red Bull Racing confirmed significant upgrades for the RB21, coinciding with Verstappen’s return to form.

Red Bull, anxious to close a growing gap to McLaren in the 2025 season, have introduced a targeted aero and floor development package, aimed at widening the RB21’s narrow handling window. Team technical director Pierre Waché outlined that while no “magic fix” was expected, the tweaks are designed to improve medium‑speed corner stability and tyre performance—areas Verstappen has flagged as weak spots  .

On top of this, Verstappen enjoys a procedural reprieve at the Red Bull Ring: two penalty points he earned from a collision in Spain will expire after Austria, eliminating the threat of a race suspension. That allows him to push hard without looming sanctions—or so he hopes  .

Looking ahead to practice, Verstappen has expressed confidence in the RB21’s latest performance direction. “I’ve been back in the simulator with the team—feeling much more positive,” he stated, referencing recent test sessions where data feedback was markedly improved .

Despite Red Bull’s cautious tone—boss Christian Horner acknowledged sportscar challenges at medium‑speed sectors—the hometown crowd remains hopeful. Verstappen, once a four-time winner here, knows that a strong weekend could reassert Red Bull’s dominance amid fierce competition.

With McLaren currently leading the constructors’ standings, Verstappen’s home advantage, upgraded car, and clean license make for a potent combination as the Austrian GP kicks off.
