ANOTHER BOOST: Former South Carolina EDGE commitment inks with Gamecocks via the transfer portal

Over five years after initially committing to South Carolina, EDGE rusher George Wilson
will finally don the Garnet and Black. Wilson, now transferring from Campbell University, officially joined the Gamecocks via the transfer portal on Tuesday night. His arrival addresses a key need for South Carolina’s defensive line and marks his return to Power 4 football. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Wilson began his college career at Florida State, redshirting in 2021 and appearing in three games in 2022. He then transferred to Campbell, where he played two seasons and tallied nine total sacks. In 2023, he played in all 11 games with four starts, recording 21 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a team-high four sacks. The following season, he appeared in 12 games, starting seven, and notched 18 tackles, including six for loss and five sacks.

A former standout at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, Wilson originally committed to South Carolina in 2020 over offers from North Carolina, Penn State, and Arizona State. However, after Will Muschamp’s departure, Wilson decommitted and signed with FSU. Coming out of high school, he was ranked as high as the No. 12 EDGE and No. 189 overall prospect in the 2021 class by 247Sports, with a mix of four-star and three-star ratings.

Wilson is the second EDGE addition for the Gamecocks this offseason, joining Demon Clowney—cousin of former USC star Jadeveon Clowney—through the portal. Head coach Shane Beamer recently acknowledged the team’s need for depth on the defensive line, noting injuries and the importance of not relying heavily on true freshmen at defensive tackle. Wilson’s arrival is expected to strengthen South Carolina’s front-line rotation heading into the upcoming season.
