Verified News: South Carolina Lands Second Player In Transfer Portal After Madina Okot Commits To The Gamecocks

As the transfer portal window closes, South Carolina women’s basketball has secured a key addition to strengthen their frontcourt. On Monday night, the Gamecocks landed Texas A&M transfer Madina Okot, a 6’10 wingspan center with a 10’3 approach height, making her a dominant force near the rim.

Okot adds valuable size and presence in the post, with efficient scoring and rebounding abilities. During the 2024–2025 season, she averaged 11.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game on 65% shooting. Her rebounding ranked third in the SEC, and impressively, 37% of her 325 total rebounds came on the offensive end. Okot also showed strong defensive skills, averaging 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. She posted a career-high four blocks against Missouri and notched a standout 21-point, 23-rebound double-overtime performance against Vanderbilt. Earlier in the season, she also recorded a career-best five steals versus Alabama State.

Originally from Kenya, Okot began playing basketball just five years ago and competed for Zetech University while awaiting her U.S. visa. Her journey adds a unique dimension to the Gamecocks’ roster.

South Carolina struggled at the center position last season, with injuries to Ashlyn Watkins and Adhel Tac limiting their options. Okot brings much-needed depth and could either serve as a reliable rotation player or rise to All-SEC status under Coach Dawn Staley’s guidance.

The Gamecocks also added elite scorer Ta’Niya Latson from Florida State, who averaged 21.3 points per game. Despite key losses—Te-Hina Paopao, Bree Hall, Sania Feagin to the WNBA and MiLaysia Fulwiley and Sakima Walker to the portal—South Carolina is reloading with high-level talent for the upcoming season.
