Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Jake Merklinger has been turning heads with his progress during spring practices in his second year with the program. Following ten sessions, the redshirt freshman is showing marked improvement, impressing both coaches and teammates alike.

Merklinger, who entered the team as the lowest-rated quarterback recruit under head coach Josh Heupel, has focused on refining his game. One major change has been altering his grip on the football, which has noticeably improved his accuracy and added more zip to his passes. Merklinger himself acknowledged the improvement, saying that the ball is now coming out of his hand with better control and strength.

In addition to his physical development, Merklinger has stepped up as a leader on the field. He’s been helping younger players grasp the offensive system while continuing to learn from starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava. He explained that he now feels confident enough in his understanding to guide teammates who may be less familiar with the playbook.

With an upcoming scrimmage and the Orange and White Game approaching, Merklinger’s progress is seen as a positive sign for Tennessee’s quarterback depth. His commitment to improvement and leadership signals a bright future and potential role in the Volunteers’ offense moving forward.
