🔥 A New F1 Superstar Is Born… But Hamilton’s First Ferrari Podium Adds Another Twist
SHANGHAI – The Shanghai International Circuit bore witness to a historic changing of the guard on Sunday as 19-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his first Formula 1 victory, leading home a Mercedes 1-2 finish at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. In a race defined by youthful brilliance and the resurgence of a legend, Lewis Hamilton secured third place to claim his long-awaited maiden podium for Scuderia Ferrari.
Starting from his record-breaking first pole position, Antonelli did not have it all his own way at the start. The Italian teenager was momentarily overhauled by a fast-starting Hamilton, who surged from third on the grid to lead into the opening complex of corners. However, Antonelli’s composure remained unshaken. By the second lap, the Mercedes prodigy utilized the potent W17 package to reclaim the lead at the Turn 14 hairpin, a position he would not relinquish for the remainder of the 56-lap contest.
The victory makes Antonelli the second-youngest winner in Formula 1 history, trailing only Max Verstappen. It also ends a 20-year drought for Italy, marking the first win for an Italian driver since Giancarlo Fisichella at the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix. “I’m speechless, I’m about to cry to be honest,” an emotional Antonelli shared over the team radio. “Thank you to the team for helping me to achieve this dream.”
Behind the leader, George Russell fought a strategic and physical battle to secure second place. Having won Saturday’s Sprint, Russell initially struggled for grip following a Lap 11 Safety Car period caused by Nico HĂĽlkenberg’s stranded Audi. The championship leader found himself shuffled back behind the dueling Ferraris but showed clinical pace to pick off both Charles Leclerc and Hamilton during the middle stint. Although a late lock-up at the hairpin briefly threatened Antonelli’s lead, the youngster recovered to finish 5.5 seconds clear of his teammate.
The highlight for many of the 230,000 fans in attendance was the intra-team warfare at Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc engaged in a “go-kart style” scrap for the final podium spot, swapping positions multiple times in the closing stages. Hamilton eventually made a decisive move at Turn 1 on Lap 39, holding off the Monegasque to secure his 203rd career podium his first in the iconic scarlet red.
“I definitely feel like I’m back to my best,” Hamilton remarked after the race. “To stay in the fight and get this first podium for Ferrari is a huge moment for me. Huge congratulations to Kimi; he took my seat at a great team and he’s doing an incredible job.”
The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix proved to be a disaster for McLaren, as both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failed to start due to separate technical issues. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen’s difficult start to the season continued with a power unit failure on Lap 46, forcing the reigning world champion to retire.
With this result, George Russell maintains a four-point lead over Antonelli in the Drivers’ Championship as the paddock prepares for the next round of this increasingly unpredictable 2026 season.
