Max Verstappen Wins Record Seventh United States Grand Prix …read more.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen delivered a commanding performance at the United States Grand Prix, tightening the championship battle against McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Norris and Piastri finished second and fifth respectively, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton slotting between them.
With just five races remaining, Norris has trimmed Piastri’s lead in the standings to 14 points, while Verstappen closed his gap to the Australian to 40 points.
After winning Saturday’s sprint, Verstappen dominated from start to finish, converting his pole position into an early lead and never looking back securing victory in Austin for a record seventh time.
Asked whether he now considered himself part of the title fight, the four-time world champion said: “For sure, the chance is there. We just need to keep delivering until the end. We’ll try everything we can it’s exciting, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Leclerc’s alternate tyre strategy kept Norris behind for much of the race, but the Briton eventually overtook the Ferrari with five laps remaining to strengthen his pursuit of Piastri in the standings.
The race itself was largely straightforward, though it coincided with Formula 1 confirming a new agreement to keep the Austin Grand Prix on the calendar until 2034.
