BREAKING: McLaren Chief Demands FIA Penalty over …read more.

The Formula 1 paddock was still buzzing days after the chequered flag fell, but not for the reasons fans would hope. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has officially requested a meeting with the FIA, voicing frustration over the controversial penalty handed to Oscar Piastri at the recent Grand Prix — a decision that many believe robbed the young Australian of a well-earned finish.

It was a race filled with tension, strategy, and skill. But for Piastri, it ended in frustration after the stewards handed him a five-second time penalty following a wheel-to-wheel battle with a rival. The decision dropped him down the order, costing him not only championship points but momentum in what’s been a promising season.

Speaking after the race, Stella was calm but visibly exasperated. “We’ve looked at all the data, the onboards, the telemetry — and from where we stand, Oscar did absolutely nothing wrong,” he said. “It was hard racing, yes, but fair. We need consistency in how these rules are applied.”

Stella’s request for a sit-down with the FIA isn’t just about defending Piastri — it’s about seeking clarity for the entire sport. McLaren, like many teams, has grown increasingly concerned with what they see as unpredictable stewarding that leaves both drivers and fans confused.

“This isn’t a one-off issue,” Stella added. “We owe it to the drivers, who put everything on the line, to ensure the rules are interpreted the same way every time. And we owe it to the fans to keep the racing pure.”

Oscar Piastri, for his part, handled the penalty with the quiet composure that’s earned him praise across the grid. “It’s disappointing, of course,” he said, standing outside the McLaren motorhome, helmet still in hand. “I felt like we were in a great position. I raced clean. We’ll move on, but I think we need to understand why that call was made.”

Fans and fellow drivers have been quick to jump to Piastri’s defense, many calling the incident a “classic racing moment” that didn’t warrant punishment. Social media lit up in the hours after the race, with hashtags like #LetThemRace trending across motorsport circles.

Veteran drivers have chimed in too. “If that’s a penalty now, what are we even doing?” one former world champion said on a post-race panel. “You can’t penalize every bit of aggressive driving. That’s what makes F1 exciting.”

The FIA has acknowledged McLaren’s request but has yet to announce whether a formal meeting will take place. Internally, sources suggest discussions are underway, though any response is likely to be carefully measured.

As the season heads into a critical stretch, the incident has reignited a familiar debate in F1: when does racing cross the line, and who gets to decide? For now, McLaren is standing firm  not just in defense of their driver, but in defense of what they believe the sport should be.

And for Piastri, the message is clear: he may have lost time on the track, but his team hasn’t lost faith.
