Veteran Mexican trainer Robert Garcia has joined the growing list of voices backing Terence Crawford ahead of his highly anticipated bout with Canelo Alvarez. Despite the natural size disadvantage and the fact that this will be Crawford’s debut at super middleweight, Garcia believes the American has a strong chance of causing an upset.
Crawford has already received support from several figures in the boxing world, including former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who predicted a late stoppage win for the Omaha native. While Crawford hasn’t fought since September, and Canelo was last in the ring this May, Garcia feels the timing may still favor Crawford.
Speaking in a recent interview, Garcia acknowledged that many doubt Crawford due to the size gap but argued that the 37-year-old’s skill set could make the difference. “Crawford has great footwork, speed, and technical ability. That’s why I think he has a real shot,” Garcia said.
He pointed out a key factor: Canelo’s recent performances have lacked urgency. “In his last few fights, Canelo gets the job done, but he’s not going the extra mile. He’s comfortable, just doing enough to win,” Garcia observed.
While Garcia still sees Canelo as the favorite, he believes the Mexican champion has shifted his mindset. “Canelo’s become more of a businessman now,” he said, implying that the hunger might not be the same. For that reason, Garcia gives Crawford “a big chance” to pull off what many see as a major upset.
