Legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has long been admired for his powerful riffs and pioneering role in shaping heavy metal music. However, in a recent interview, the iconic musician admitted there are certain guitars he simply could never get along with.
“I don’t use them,” Iommi said, referring to some popular guitar models that many musicians swear by. “They just never felt right in my hands. I tried, but I couldn’t play them properly.”
Iommi, known for his deep connection with Gibson SG guitars, revealed that despite experimenting with a range of instruments throughout his career, some well-known brands and models didn’t suit his unique playing style — particularly after the industrial accident in his youth that left him with injured fingertips.
“I’ve always had to adapt how I play, and not every guitar responds well to that,” he explained. “Some necks are too thin, or the frets just don’t work with how I’ve set up my technique.”
While he didn’t name specific models he struggled with, Iommi emphasized that choosing the right guitar is a personal experience for every player. “What works for one guitarist might be a nightmare for another. You’ve got to find what feels like an extension of you.”
Despite the challenges, Iommi’s legacy as a guitar legend remains untarnished. His work with Black Sabbath laid the foundation for heavy metal, and his signature sound continues to inspire generations of musicians.
As for those guitars he couldn’t master? “They’re still great instruments — just not for me,” he laughed.
For fans, the takeaway is clear: even the greatest players have their preferences — and sometimes, limitations — but it’s what they do with what works that truly defines their artistry.
