University of Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope has high hopes for sophomore guard Otega Oweh as the Wildcats gear up for the upcoming season. In a recent interview, Pope detailed how Oweh can elevate his game and become a key contributor on both ends of the floor.
“Otega has all the tools athleticism, strength, and a relentless work ethic,” Pope stated. “But what will really take him to the next level is refining his decision-making and becoming more consistent with his shot.”
Oweh, who transferred from the University of Oklahoma, averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season. Known for his defensive intensity and explosive drives, Oweh has already impressed during early workouts in Lexington. Pope emphasized that with focused development, Oweh could emerge as one of the premier two-way guards in college basketball.
“He has the potential to be a lockdown defender and a dynamic scorer,” Pope added. “We’re working on improving his outside shooting and helping him read the game better in transition and half-court sets.”
Pope also noted Oweh’s leadership qualities, describing him as a “natural competitor” who brings energy to every practice. With a fresh system and a new coaching staff in place, the Wildcats are optimistic that players like Oweh will thrive.
As Kentucky looks to return to national prominence, all eyes will be on players like Oweh to take that critical leap forward under Pope’s guidance.
