BREAKING: Duke’s Star Guard Cooper Flagg Announced Via ESPN That Despite Declaring For The NBA Draft. He Will Maintain His College Eligibility, Per Inside

Duke’s star guard Cooper Flagg has officially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, but in a surprise move, he will maintain his college eligibility, per a report from Inside Carolina.

The announcement, made via ESPN, has sent waves through the college basketball world. Flagg, widely considered the projected No. 1 overall pick, now holds the power to either begin his professional journey or return to Duke for another season.

“This year has been special,” Flagg said in a statement. “I’m declaring for the draft to explore every option, but I want to keep the door open to return to Duke. I haven’t made a final decision yet.”

Flagg had a phenomenal freshman season, leading the Blue Devils with 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and standout defensive play. He was instrumental in Duke’s Final Four run and became the face of college basketball in just one season.

By preserving his eligibility, Flagg can participate in pre-draft evaluations, including the NBA Draft Combine and team interviews, without losing NCAA eligibility — as long as he doesn’t hire an agent or sign a professional contract.

The decision reflects a growing trend among top prospects who want more control over their futures in a changing basketball landscape. For now, the Blue Devil faithful will have to wait a little longer to find out if their star will return to Cameron Indoor for another electrifying season — or take the leap to the NBA.
