The South Carolina women’s basketball team came up just short of a national championship, falling to the UConn Huskies in the NCAA title game after a strong tournament run with wins over Tennessee Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Duke, and Texas.
Following the tough loss, head coach Dawn Staley faced another setback as star guard MiLaysia Fulwiley announced her decision to enter the transfer portal after two seasons. In a heartfelt message on social media, Fulwiley thanked her hometown of Columbia, Coach Staley, her teammates, and fans for their support, expressing gratitude for the memories and excitement for her future.
During her final season, Fulwiley averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. In the championship game against UConn, she contributed nine points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals, highlighting her defensive strength with a season average of 1.5 steals per game.
Despite Fulwiley’s departure, South Carolina secured a major addition with the transfer of Florida State star Ta’Niya Latson. After three standout seasons with the Seminoles, Latson brings impressive stats—25.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game—to the Gamecocks’ roster, offering hope for continued success under Coach Staley.
