Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has strongly criticized Red Bull’s management over their handling of young driver Liam Lawson. The controversy arises as Lawson, who impressed during his substitute appearances for AlphaTauri in 2023, continues to be overlooked for a full-time race seat.

Lawson stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo after the Australian suffered a hand injury last season, delivering solid performances and even scoring points. Many expected him to be rewarded with a permanent seat for 2024, but Red Bull decided to retain both Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda at their junior team, now known as Visa Cash App RB. This left Lawson without a race seat, instead serving as a reserve driver.

Schumacher, who has been vocal about Red Bull’s driver policies, did not hold back in his criticism. He argued that Lawson’s talent and performances warranted a place on the grid and suggested Red Bull’s management, led by Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, mishandled the situation. He also claimed the team’s decision-making lacked fairness and transparency.

“Liam did everything right, yet he’s left on the sidelines while others get the opportunities,” Schumacher said. “It’s disappointing to see how Red Bull treats young talents.”

Despite missing out on a 2024 seat, Lawson remains under Red Bull’s contract and could still get an opportunity if a vacancy arises during the season. However, many, including Schumacher, believe he deserved a guaranteed spot from the start.
