Ferrari has defended its decision to keep Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc on slick tires during the brief rain shower that caused chaos at the Australian Grand Prix. The team faced criticism after both drivers struggled for grip while rivals opted for intermediate tires, gaining a significant advantage.
The rain hit the Albert Park Circuit midway through the race, creating treacherous conditions. While several teams quickly pitted for intermediates, Ferrari hesitated, believing the rain would be brief and track conditions would remain manageable. However, the worsening weather caught them off guard, leaving both Hamilton and Leclerc sliding on the damp surface.
Speaking after the race, Ferrari’s team principal explained their strategy: “We were monitoring the weather closely and expected only a light drizzle that wouldn’t require a tire change. Unfortunately, the rain was heavier than forecasted, and by the time we considered pitting, we had already lost too much time.”
Leclerc, who had been fighting for a podium position, saw his chances slip away as he struggled for grip, ultimately finishing further down the order. Meanwhile, Hamilton, still adjusting to his new team after his high-profile move from Mercedes, faced similar challenges but managed to keep his car on track.
Despite the setback, Ferrari remains optimistic about their car’s pace and the progress they are making. “It’s frustrating, but we learned valuable lessons today. We’ll be better prepared for unpredictable conditions in future races,” the team added.
The Australian Grand Prix showcased the fine margins of Formula 1 strategy, with Ferrari’s gamble not paying off. With the season still young, both Hamilton and Leclerc will be eager to bounce back in the upcoming rounds.
