The FIA is tightening its control over a controversial aerodynamic feature after Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Vachet accused McLaren and Ferrari of using a passive DRS system during pre-season testing in Bahrain. Mercedes has also come under suspicion for a similar approach.

The passive DRS system, allegedly achieved through a flexible rear wing, allows cars to reduce drag at high speeds without an active mechanism. While teams have explored such solutions before, the FIA is now taking stricter measures to prevent potential rule violations.

According to reports, the governing body previously acknowledged teams’ arguments regarding the legality of the system but has since decided to reinforce regulations. Starting from the Australian Grand Prix, all teams will be required to install additional cameras and special stickers on their cars to monitor rear wing movement more closely. These new measures aim to detect any unauthorized aerodynamic advantages gained through flexing components.

The consequences for violating the regulations could be severe. If the FIA detects the use of passive DRS, teams risk disqualification from the race. This decision comes as part of the FIA’s ongoing effort to ensure a level playing field and maintain strict compliance with aerodynamic regulations.

The controversy has already sparked debate within the paddock, with some teams arguing that flexibility in aerodynamic elements has always been a gray area in F1 regulations. However, Red Bull’s complaint has pushed the FIA to take decisive action, ensuring that no team gains an unfair advantage.

With the Australian Grand Prix approaching, all eyes will be on the scrutineering process. Teams suspected of using passive DRS will now have to prove their compliance, setting the stage for an intense battle both on and off the track.
