Report: Matthew Stafford Expected to Have ‘Strong Trade Market’ If Rams Can’t Reach Contract Agreement

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford could be a highly sought-after trade asset if the team fails to reach a contract resolution with him, according to a recent report.

Stafford, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season, remains under contract, but discussions regarding his deal have reportedly hit an impasse. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that multiple teams would be interested in acquiring the veteran quarterback should he become available.

“There would be a strong trade market for Stafford if the Rams decided to move on,” Fowler said, citing league sources. The 36-year-old signal-caller has proven he can still play at a high level, throwing for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns last season while leading the Rams to the playoffs.

One of the key issues in Stafford’s contract discussions appears to be his guaranteed money. The quarterback signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Rams in 2022, but only a portion of his future salary is fully guaranteed. If the two sides can’t reach an agreement, the Rams might consider dealing him to free up cap space and potentially transition to a younger quarterback.

Among the teams that could be interested in Stafford are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons, all of whom are searching for an upgrade at quarterback. The New York Jets could also be in the mix if they decide to add a veteran backup for Aaron Rodgers.

While Stafford has not publicly expressed a desire to leave Los Angeles, the situation remains fluid. If trade talks heat up, he could become one of the biggest names to move this offseason.
