Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted to making a significant mistake in handling Lewis Hamilton’s situation, acknowledging the seven-time world champion’s dissatisfaction following his departure from the team.

Speaking in a recent interview, Wolff reflected on a past decision that did not sit well with Hamilton. “I made a big mistake,” he said. “You weren’t happy.” While Wolff did not specify the exact issue, his comments suggest tensions within the team, particularly in light of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for the 2025 season.

Hamilton, who raced for Mercedes from 2013 to 2024, achieved unprecedented success under Wolff’s leadership, securing six of his seven world titles with the team. However, the past two seasons were challenging, with Mercedes struggling to produce a car capable of competing with Red Bull. This performance decline may have contributed to Hamilton’s decision to seek a new challenge at Ferrari.

Wolff has always been open about the dynamic between him and Hamilton, often describing their relationship as one of mutual respect but also occasional disagreements. His recent admission highlights the pressures and tough decisions involved in managing an elite Formula 1 team.

With Hamilton now at Ferrari, Mercedes faces the challenge of adapting to life without their star driver while striving to regain competitiveness. Meanwhile, Hamilton begins a new chapter in his career, aiming to bring Ferrari back to championship contention.
